Plant Growth Regulators

Most people know that our bodies contain hormones—substances that act as regulators. Some hormones are responsible for growth processes, others for metabolism, and still others for the body’s reproductive processes. They are found not only in humans and animals but also in plants. They are called phytohormones. Just like animal hormones, phytohormones regulate all vital processes in a plant organism. Scientists have now identified a large number of phytohormones. These include auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, etc. Auxins, for example, regulate root formation and the distribution of various substances within the plant; gibberellins regulate flowering and fruiting; cytokinins influence the growth of buds and shoots.
