The shape of the black truffle is round or tuberous, its texture is cartilaginous or fleshy, its size ranges from a pea to a large potato tuber and even larger, and its weight can sometimes reach 1 kg. All fruiting bodies have an outer leathery layer—smooth, cracked, or warty—called the peridium, and a spore-bearing tissue inside, which, when cut, has a characteristic marbled pattern of light and dark veins.

Truffles can be grown not only in greenhouses, but also in nurseries, parks, forests, and gardens—both under trees of any age and alongside saplings.
