Full description
Edible puffball (Lycoperdon)

A genus of mushrooms in the Agaricaceae family. White and firm when young, becoming increasingly brown and soft. The flesh is initially pure white, then greenish-yellow, and finally brown. The fruiting bodies are closed, rounded, pear-shaped, often with a well-defined false stem, and are small to medium in size. The exoperidium is covered with spiny projections, which may fall off with age.

From May to late fall, it grows on forest edges, lawns, and clearings, preferring nitrogen-rich soil. Raincoats are edible until they lose their whiteness.

An edible and high-quality mushroom; it is best to slice it, bread it, and fry it in oil.

Growing Instructions:

In a garden plot shaded by trees, dig a hole 2 m wide and 25–30 cm deep. Fill it with a mixture of tree leaves (aspen, birch, poplar, willow) and their branches. Cover with a layer of about 5 cm of forest humus or soil from under the trees. Evenly sow dry mycelium that has been pre-mixed with 1 liter of dry soil. Water the soil using a drip method and cover with branches. Once the bed is overgrown with mycelium (after a month), cover it with last year’s leaves.

Fruiting:
The optimal temperature range is 16–29 °C; lighting should be day-night or 4 hours per day in enclosed spaces; the ideal relative humidity should be no less than 85% (drip irrigation if necessary). The first mushrooms will appear in about 20–30 days. Fruiting occurs in waves and lasts for 6 weeks, with 7–10 days between waves. To ensure continuous fruiting, it is advisable to periodically inoculate the bed with mycelium.

Application rate:
10 grams of mycelium (1 packet) is sufficient for 2 m
².

Soil acidity is a very important factor for successful mushroom cultivation. For chanterelles, the optimal pH is 7–7.5. More acidic soil (lower pH) must be deacidified by watering with a solution of quicklime (100 g of lime per 5 L of water per 1 m²).
