Full description

Clary Sage

A perennial honey plant with a long, straight stem 70–90 cm tall and fragrant leaves. It has a strong root system. The flowers of clary sage are very beautiful, large, pinkish-purple or light blue, and rarely white. Bees actively collect pollen and nectar from them. Nectar productivity is 200–400 kg/ha. The honey produced from clary sage is amber-colored, transparent, and of high flavor quality.

Growing from seed — seeds are sown directly into open ground in the spring (April–May) or before winter (late October–early November) in sunny areas. The weight of 1,000 seeds is 3–5 g; seed viability is maintained for 4–6 years.

Seeding rate: 6–8 kg/ha. Planting depth: 2–3 cm.

Planting pattern: row spacing 45 to 70–80 cm, plant spacing 50–60 cm.

The soil must be moist when the seeds germinate. Clary sage can be planted in any soil type except waterlogged soils. It grows best in fertile soils and tolerates drought well.

For the winter, remove the leaves and stems from clary sage, and it is advisable to cover the plant with straw or other material; this is necessary if the winter is snowless and frosty.

Clary sage blooms from June to September, with a flowering period of 65–70 days.

The scent of clove sage truly resembles nutmeg, musk, or ambergris—warm and sweet.

Culinary uses:
In the food industry, clary sage essential oil is used in the production of beverages and confectionery to impart a musky aroma.
Clary sage oil is classified as an aphrodisiac. As an anti-stress agent, it helps resolve sexual issues and enhances reproductive function in both men and women.
Fresh and dried inflorescences and leaves are used as a seasoning for culinary products and to flavor cheese, tea, and other foods.
In Mexico and Chile, the roots and young stems are used to prepare aromatic refreshing drinks, and they are ground into flour for confectionery.

Medicinal properties: The above-ground parts, rich in essential oil, are used in medicine during the flowering period for baths and applications to treat polyarthritis, osteomyelitis, deforming osteoarthritis, and trophic ulcers.
The raw material remaining after oil extraction is used for therapeutic anti-rheumatic baths.
In folk medicine, the plant was used for kidney stones, rheumatism, and tachycardia; a decoction of the above-ground parts in milk was used as an antitussive, as well as an aromatic and digestive aid.
The warming and relaxing effect of clary sage oil alleviates nervous tension, which is very important during feverish and panic states. It improves concentration and memory and stimulates brain activity. It enhances creativity and awakens intuition.
Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of an ointment containing 5–20% clary sage extracts in the treatment of psoriasis.
