Whitewash trees in the fall after leaf fall and in the spring during dry weather when the temperature is above 0 degrees. Whitewashing can also be done during the January thaw.
Before whitewashing, carefully clean the trunk and branches of dead bark scales, under which pests overwinter: leaf rollers, moths, apple and pear fruit borers, apple blossom beetles, scale insects, spider mites, aphids, etc. Collect the debris on a plastic sheet placed underneath and burn it.
